Daniel. Lewis. Associate member. The Reno Club.
The Reno Club.In 1972, Daniel arrived in Manchester from the Cotswolds, and was unfamiliar with the night club scene. Being quite young it was not long before he and his new found friends began to look for musical venues in the area, and apart from going to clubs in town and blues parties, they also visited the two main nightclubs in the Moss Side district. The Nile club was a reggae music venue, and the Reno club was a soul music venue.
Daniel was drawn towards the Reno Club because he heard a new style of music which he was not familiar with. ' I was only used to watching top of the pops and listening to the radio. That was when he started to understand the real power of soul music. He became an avid listener, and regular at The Reno Night Club. He was also fascinated watching the DJ playing the music with his back to the audience and every so often he would look around to see how they were responding to the music.
After a while Daniel got to know the DJ whose name is Persian and they became close friends. From 1972 when he started to listen to soul music, he has visited many Soul venues and, ' In my opinion, Persian's unique style is second to none. His knowledge and experience as a DJ sets him apart from the rest. ' Persian is not just a DJ in the normal sense of the word, he is a musical innovator. ' Those who frequented The Reno would agree with these sentiments.
When the Reno was demolished in 1986, we were all saddened by our great loss, and been yearning for it's like ever since. Now I am privileged to be apart of the newly established Reno club which was formed in 2007 by DJ Persian and associates. The aim and objectives are found on the home page of this Website.

I have fond memories of the Reno Club. Of a time in my life when friends, music and Saturday nights were synonymous with the life and the heart of the Manchester club scene. The Reno DJ's gave to us a gift of music, which brought groups of people together with a common goal.....
To listen to fine music from a range of musicians with a true musical talent, and an era that will never be equalled.... not in my lifetime, Artists and Grooves such as ''Keys to the world'' (L J Reynolds), ''Turned onto you'' (Ladies of the eighties), ''Rush over'' (Marcus Miller),''Joy & Pain'' (Frankie Beverley & Maze), ''We got the funk'' (Positive Force), ''The message'' (Cymande) and ''Jazz carnival'' (Azymuth) and I am sure you have your favourite selections.
The week of 9 to 5 toil for me, moved faster towards the weekend (and during the week dependent on your life style), for a Mecca of music at the Reno, which was a meeting place for old and new friends. The DJ's became the icons for a generation of Manchester clubbers, who yearned for the glamour and excitement that could only be assuaged in that musical groove.
Recently, I had the pleasure to attend the 2nd Reno Revival, nights, I was taken back to a time, I had thought had gone forever. The music was like an old friend..... Talking of which, I met up with many old friends, I had known all those years ago, and reminisced of the old times we listened to the music and danced the night away, at the Reno. What an amazing time was had by all. I was amazed by the number of young people who also attended who were entranced by the music of our generation, and I realised, the music was timeless in its appeal.
Thanks to the old crew, and the Reno DJ's, the music, the artistes, the vibe and the Reno Live on!!!
Thanks a lot guys!
